Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares this message in the wake of the recent volcanic eruption in Guatemala.

Dear dharma friends,

The devastating volcanic eruption that took place in Guatemala has claimed at least 75 lives. 200 people are still missing, and thousands of homes and livelihoods have been destroyed.

As the country mourns those that have passed, we dedicate our merit to all of the victims and their loved ones.

In the face of such sudden loss, we see all too clearly the impermanent nature of our world. For there is no more stark reminder of our constantly changing lives than when we lose loved ones.

As we join Guatemala in prayer, may we reflect on the first of the Four Seals that the Buddha taught: ‘All compounded phenomena are impermanent.’

With prayers

Every time before a plane takes off, it has to be checked from top to bottom – the wings, the engine, everything. So in the same way it is very noble and important to be constantly on guard and check one’s own being. Hence, as a practitioner, one should be aware of everything so that one doesn’t accumulate unnecessary karma.

The purpose of life is to understand life. When we understand life, we see that this life is about benefiting others. There is nothing more, nothing negative or mysterious – it is plain and simple: to benefit others.

28 May 2018

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message on the eve of Vesak:

Today marks the eve of Vesak, the anniversary of the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni.

Just think: some 2,500 years ago, on this very day, Prince Siddhartha was sitting in deep meditation under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, spending his last moments as an ordinary being. As the moon approached its fullest state, so Prince Siddhartha’s compassion and wisdom were growing to their fullest Buddha-nature.

Vesak is an opportunity to reflect not only on the life of Buddha, but on the journey that all of us are on, the path of a Bodhisattva, and the practical steps that it takes to become enlightened. For we do not need to take a leap of faith. Prince Siddhartha did not become a Buddha through some kind of magic or mystery. He became a Buddha through dedicated practice, through being an example of great courage, and this is what I encourage all of us to consider on this auspicious day.

All of us have a Buddha nature, all of us have an Inner Wealth with limitless treasures of wisdom and compassion. The path that Buddha set before us is the path that lies within us.

To realise our Buddha nature, we must to dedicate our lives to practice. The practice of mindfulness and awareness is something that we can all apply anywhere. The practice of loving kindness and compassion is something that we can all apply at any time. The practice of being a good human being is something that we can all apply right here, right now.

At this auspicious time, we remember the life and example of an extraordinary being, someone who freed himself from samsara in a single lifetime. We also remember Buddha’s message for all of us:

We too are capable of extraordinary love, unconditional love. We too are capable of extraordinary compassion, limitless compassion. We too are capable of being an example, to inspire countless beings.

Therefore, let us dedicate our lives to practice, and take daily steps on the journey of a Bodhisattva.

With compassion

17 May 2018

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message for students:

Over the last few days, we have seen the tragic loss of life in Gaza, as well as continued threats in relation to North Korea and its nuclear weapons talks.

The prospect of widespread violent conflict in the Middle East, or even a war between nuclear states, is something that gives rise to fear in many people’s minds. We must pray for the end of violence, and for the prevention of a great war of the world.

Peace is beautiful – perhaps too beautiful, because it’s so pleasant that we are at risk of taking it for granted. From one perspective, this extreme relaxation or laziness in times of peace is the principle cause for war. War is inevitable the moment we ignore the value of peace.

It is therefore imperative that we are more alert when we experience peace. Otherwise peace-time will be the birthplace of war. Of course, we do not need to panic, but we must be vigilant. This is one of the reasons why Buddhists practice meditation – to remain vigilant and acknowledge the value of peace.

People of all backgrounds have different practices, different customs, different rituals in their lives that they cherish: whether we are meditating, praying to a deity, worshiping Mother Earth; even the practice of cherishing friends and family, peers, and colleagues – no matter what our beliefs and practices are, we should utilise them to help us realise and appreciate what we have, so that no size or scale of disharmony may be generated in our hearts.

In this moment, if you are experiencing a good amount of peace, please cherish it – do not ignore it or take it for granted.

Our true nature lies in peace, not war. As Buddhists, we experience this, we understand this, when we meditate.

I have heard it said that prayer or meditation is of no use, and that what is required is ‘real action’. From a Buddhist perspective, we understand that prayer is not inaction, but a powerful and beneficial form of action. Prayer not only keeps us vigilant and appreciative of peace – it is a source of peace.

Diplomatic talks and foreign relations will only be successful if they are rooted in the sincere aspiration for the prevention and cessation of violence. This aspiration, this prayer, is the root that enables peace to flourish.

When we pray together, we accumulate merit that has benefit for all sentient beings.

Therefore, let us all pray together for the end of violence and its causes. Let us pray for peace.

With compassion

Karmapa’s message concerning the fire in Russia:

Dear dharma friends

I learned today of the fire in a Russian shopping centre that killed more than 60 people. The fire spread on the floor where children’s playing rooms and cinemas were situated and, tragically, up to 40 children are among those unaccounted for. The fire also killed all of the animals located in a petting zoo inside the centre.

When one hears about such news, it is difficult to find the words to say.

Therefore, let us take a moment, and pray together for all of the victims, the families who are grieving, and all of those affected by this disaster.

With compassion

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message on the occasion of the United Nations International Day of Happiness:

Dear All,

Today (20th March) is the United Nations International Day of Happiness.

I would like to start by offering my wishes for the happiness of all of you, and to invite you to reflect on the nature of happiness itself. After all, all of us are searching for ‘happiness’ in one way or another.

From a Buddhist perspective, while everyday matters are beneficial to celebrate, they are temporary by their nature. Therefore, it is important to reflect on what is timeless, and how a truly lasting happiness may be experienced.

Last week, I led a public meditation course based on an ancient work of literature ‘The Way of the Bodhisattva’, written by an Indian Buddhist called Shantideva. One of the main themes of this great text is awareness. As we were reflecting on the text, and trying to comprehend our many innate qualities, we came to a simple but powerful understanding:

Simply through the practice of awareness alone – without having to actually aim for happiness in any way – we were somehow able to experience, and realise in our own way, how we arrived at this thing we call the present. And through this experience, it gave birth to a timeless state: free of the burden of the past, and free of fear and expectations of the future.

Perhaps this is the happiness that we have been searching for? Due to this realisation, time seemed to disappear – it became almost irrelevant and, paradoxically, timeless.

It’s quite possible that for some, this experience was so momentary, so short-lived, that the moment when we left the comfort and environment of the meditation hall, we were right back to where we started.

However, if I dare say so, in that moment we did see a glimpse of what Shantideva was trying convey through the technology of his teaching. Even though ‘The Way of the Bodhisattva’ was written at the beginning of the eighth century, the practice of vigilant introspection or awareness felt most relevant for us all. Through the practice of awareness, we were able to appreciate even our most basic functions, such as breathing, blinking and thinking. No matter how mundane or ordinary they might seem, this vigilant introspection brought very grounded experiences and an understanding that we are here in this very moment. We are not somewhere ‘out there’, in the far reaches of the universe in some insignificant place, like a blue dot around some other bright dots. We are here. We have arrived in this present moment.

Perhaps this is an amazing discovery. Perhaps not! But in any case it was a grounding experience, and it feels only appropriate to share this on the United Nations International Day of Happiness.

May this simple sharing of a moment, bring forth a certain sense of awakening to each and everyone, and help you to arrive in this moment we call ‘now’.

With compassion

##Karmapa’s message regarding the Jokhang Monastery fire:

Dear dharma friends

Many of you will have seen the news and images of the fire at Jokhang Monastery in Lhasa over the weekend.

While the extent of the damage is unclear, it is understandable that for many people, seeing one of our most sacred monasteries alight may give rise to disturbing emotions.

When I was in Lhasa as a young boy, I used to visit the Jokhang with my family almost every day, to pay respects to the Jowo Rinpoche – the statue of the Buddha. Like so many others, I would regularly pray in front of the Jowo and make offerings there. I remember feeling such a deep sense of trust in the Jowo – I even occasionally sat on the Buddha’s lap, feeling very safe and comfortable.

The Jokhang is a special and spiritual place for all Tibetan Buddhists. As well as one of our most sacred sites, it is also an important meeting place for the Tibetan community.

I pray that the fire has not caused any lasting damage, and feel comforted that no casualties have been reported.

At the same time, it is also important for us to remember that we are not defined by our temples, our titles, or what people think or say about us. As Buddhists, we need the courage to understand and accept that there is no such thing as a real, solid or permanent home – and therefore nothing to be attached to. In absolute terms, what really matters is that we use our innate values of wisdom and compassion, our Inner Wealth, to benefit all living beings.

Therefore, we should not let our minds be disturbed by emotion. Instead, let us keep our minds calm, and tap into the pool of compassion and wisdom that lies within all of us, no matter who or where we are.
