As I write, at least 207 people have lost their lives and hundreds more have been injured after several explosions in Sri Lanka.

During a holy week for Christians, worshippers were attacked in their houses of worship. Others were targeted in hotels.

Please join me in praying for all those affected, for the people of Sri Lanka, and for the end of violence in our world.

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message in the wake of the Notre Dame fire and the fatal bus crash in Madeira, Portugal.

Dear dharma friends

All things are transient. When we are faced by impermanence, whether it is the sudden loss of life, or the sudden destruction of a magnificent monument, it can have a strong effect on us.

The tragic bus crash in Portugal, in which at least 29 people have lost their lives, and the massive fire at Notre-Dame, are just two of countless examples in which we are confronted by the challenging reality of impermanence.

As we seek to rebuild our lives in the face of change, may we learn to understand and accept impermanence in all its forms. Suffering is only compounded when we resist our constantly changing reality.

Please join me in praying for all those affected by events in Portugal and France, and other tragedies around the world.

Following a huge storm in Nepal, which led to many fatalities, Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message.

Dear dharma friends

A massive storm has hit Nepal, killing at least 31 people, and injuring more than 600 people in Bara District.

I was in Nepal only a few months ago. On this visit, and on many occasions over the years, I have been inspired by the resilience of the country and its people, despite the many obstacles it has faced, of which this storm is the latest.

Nepal has strong roots in Buddhism. May the blessing of the Buddhas help us find a limitless source of strength, courage and compassion. This source does not lie somewhere ‘out there’ but is within us all. Our Inner Wealth helps us to overcome a mind disturbed by fear and confusion, even during the most challenging moments.

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message concerning recent tragedies.

Dear dharma friends

It was only days ago when I wrote to you following the terrible attacks in New Zealand, which left 50 people dead and 50 others wounded.

Now, there is the news that a gunman has killed and injured several people on a tram in Utrecht, Netherlands. A cyclone has killed hundreds in southern Africa. Other natural and unnatural disasters are also occurring in other places, in what seems to be an almost constant stream of sadness.

It may feel as though we are living in an increasingly dangerous and scary world. It is true, that many people face the daily reality of war and violent conflict. For most of us, though, this negative impression flows from the news that we see on our screens or read in the newspapers. While it is important to be aware of what is happening around the world, when we constantly consume violence and fear, there is a risk that it can consume us.

When we look up from our screens, and take time to meditate on the nature of our mind, we may see a very different world. A world of hope. A world of loving kindness and compassion. Most importantly, we are able to calm our minds, respond with wisdom, and not react with anger or other afflictive emotions.

We hold the victims of these tragedies in our hearts, and pray for the end of suffering and its causes.

Dear dharma friends

I was so saddened to hear about the mass shootings at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. As I write, at least 40 worshippers were killed during their Friday prayers, and 48 people have been injured.

Pray with all your heart for peace in the minds of those who have passed away. And pray for those who are affected by this tragedy and all the other tragedies that touch our hearts.

Do not despair. Instead, pray with all your heart, in whichever way you know.

Meditate if you can, but do not let despair work against your heart and succumb to overwhelming fear.

May we pray for the victims and loved ones of this awful attack, and for all of the people of New Zealand.

Dear dharma friends

An Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed this morning. All 157 people on board, including people from 33 different nationalities, lost their lives in the tragedy.

At this difficult moment, we pray for all of the victims and their loved ones.

None of us know how long we have in this life, and so we must use every moment wisely. May we utilise this heartbreaking news, this tragic example of impermanence, as a reminder to treat all others with loving kindness and compassion.

In the wake of the Brumadinho dam disaster in Brazil, Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message:

Dear dharma friends

As I write, more than 300 people are still missing after the Brumadinho dam collapse in Brazil over the weekend. Already, it has been confirmed that 58 people have lost their lives.

In the midst of such a disaster, where families are frantic with worry for the wellbeing of their loved ones, it is difficult to know what to say. This dam burst has broken the hearts of a whole community and country.

This tragic reminder of impermanence brings to mind the importance of using every moment with wisdom and compassion, and to appreciate our loved ones with all our hearts. Everything is constantly in flux, and we must not take our own precious human lives, or anyone else’s, for granted.

While I never had the opportunity to meet with Shivakumara Swamiji, his lifelong service to helping people, particularly those who are most vulnerable, is an inspiring example for spiritual practitioners of all traditions.

In Buddhism, we pray for a long life not because we simply want to survive. We pray for longevity in order to benefit sentient beings. May we all follow the example of Shivakumara Swamiji.’

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message regarding the recent shipwrecks in the Mediterranean.

Dear dharma friends

In the last couple of days, about 170 people have lost their lives in shipwrecks in the Mediterranean, as they sought to find somewhere where they could find safety for themselves and their families.

In some ways, this is a familiar story – more than 2200 people died trying to cross the Mediterranean in 2018. We must always remember that every human life is precious. Every human being is worthy of loving kindness and compassion. And every lost life is worthy of solemn remembrance. No matter where they are from. No matter the circumstances of their passing. No matter their religion, race or background.

We must also remember the opportunities that we have in every moment. Many of us live in countries where we have food, we have shelter, and our lives are not in immediate danger. May we appreciate this with all our hearts, and make the most of this precious opportunity.

When we pray, we pray for the enlightenment of all sentient beings. Therefore, may we all pray together for all those who search for a safer life, and for all victims of other tragedies around the world.

Indonesia tsunami: #Karmapa’s message of condolence

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message of condolence following Saturday’s tsunami in Indonesia.

Dear dharma friends

A deadly tsunami has yet again hit Indonesia. As I write, at least 281 people have lost their lives, and 1016 people are injured, though these tragic figures are likely to rise.

This follows the earthquake and tsunami in September that killed more than 2000 people, engulfing the city of Palu.

Behind each number, each statistic, is a sentient being: a mother, a father, a sister or brother. As we pray, let us hold each of these people in our hearts, and offer love and compassion to all those affected by this disaster.
