期望和懷疑

噶瑪巴對於期望和懷疑:

我們有期望是正常的,因為我們生活在一個給條件限制的世界裡,並且因為是元素的組合,使我們成為一個受條件限制的生命。所以,如果我們只不過不時懷著期望,並且沒有過度的情緒,這是很正常,我認為這是可以的。

同樣,我們也會有疑慮。同道理,如果我們有不斷、過度的懷疑,當然這樣對於心靈是不健康的,最終對整個系統來說也是不健康。當我們不了解事情時,我們懷疑是正常的,我們只需要弄明白事情。當我們通過學習和知識吸收獲得經驗時,我們就能清楚地看到我們沒有什麼需要懷疑的。

因此,當我們首先接受我們的期望和懷疑時,自然會克服許多挑戰。接下來要做的是駕馭期望和疑慮所帶來的情緒,這樣事情會變得更簡單。


Karmapa on expectations and doubts:

It is normal that we expect, because we are living in a conditioned world, and there are components that make us a conditioned being. So it is only normal, and if we just have expectations from time to time genuinely, without excessive emotion, I think it is okay.

Similarly, we also have doubts. And the same principle applies: if we have continuous, excessive doubting, of course it is unhealthy for the mind and then eventually for the whole system. So when we don’t know things, it is normal that we have doubts, and we can simply clarify things. When we gain experience, by learning and absorbing knowledge, we see clearly that we have nothing to doubt.

Therefore, when we first accept that we have expectations and doubts, a lot of challenges are naturally overcome. And then the next step will be to negotiate all of the emotions that come along with expectations and doubts. Then it becomes much simpler.

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message concerning the loss of life caused by the monsoon rains in Maharashtra, India.

Dear dharma friends

At least 35 people are reported to have lost their lives in Maharashtra, India, where there has been the heaviest rainfall in more than ten years.

All over the world, news of natural and unnatural disasters fill our screens. May our hearts be filled with compassion. And may we use each of these reminders of impermanence to waste no time in seeking to benefit all sentient beings.

Please join me in praying for all of the people of Maharashtra and for all those who suffer in our world.

How to keep a pure view and open heart in daily life?

#Karmapa:

Try your very best to follow the Ten Virtues as much as possible, every day. And then you don’t have to use the word ‘refrain’ but to somehow distance yourself from the opposite of the Ten Virtues, the Ten Non-Virtues.

為了能從業力、煩惱和習氣中解脫,首先我們要生起或依止三種不同的戒律:別解脫戒、菩薩戒和密乘戒。諸佛菩薩通過各種戒行一再證明,守持淨戒能真正提升我們內在特質。

In order to liberate ourselves from karma, kleshas and habitual patterns, to begin with we are required to generate or depend on the three different types of vows: the Pratimoksha Vows, the Bodhisattva Vows, and the tantric vows. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have shown in the past over and over again, through various activities, that by utilizing these vows we can truly enhance our inherent qualities.

We have to really rejoice and appreciate that due to our merit, due to our own sweat, due to our own strength and courage from our past lives, we have all these opportunities here now. We also have to appreciate the timeless aspirations made by all the Buddhas, all the bodhisattvas of the past, as well as the present, because it is really due to their wishes, due to their aspirations that our efforts have a result. So these two wonderful conditions have come together. This is our result, this is why all of us are here.

Some might say that it is easier said than done. But when we realise how closely related thinking, saying and doing are, it is better to speak a word of peace, than to say nothing at all.

親愛的法友,

在五年前的六月十一日這一天,第十四世昆津夏瑪仁波切法王示現了佛行涅槃。

由於眾生對永恆和虛無有著根深蒂固的想法和態度,因此覺悟者要表達無常教法是極具挑戰性。願我們累積的功德與智慧使我們能聽聞、思考和禪修這種珍貴的無常教法。

我想請大家利用這一天來反思生命的無常。不要讓無常成為可怕的消息,因為死亡永遠不是最終的結局。它從未如此,而且也永遠不會是如此。這不是對生存一種絕望的吶喊。因此,只要接受無常。

如果你接受無常,你會發現它有一種奇妙的特質,它能發掘你本有的覺察,就像光線能照亮,或者暗淡有助於對比和聚焦,令我們的視線比以往任何時候都更清晰。再次,這不是鼓勵我們對生活的執著。所以,不要害怕。只需要專注於呼吸並思惟無常。

透過這種方式,我們的心會與一個覺悟者的菩提心無別無異。

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message on the fifth anniversary of the parinirvana of His Holiness 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche:

Dear dharma friends

His Holiness 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche displayed the Parinirvana aspect of Buddha’s activity on this day, 11th of June, five years ago.

Due to sentient beings’ extreme mental attitudes of eternalism and nihilism, the teaching of impermanence is challenging for enlightened beings to express. May our virtuous accumulation of merit and wisdom support us in hearing, contemplating and meditating this precious expression of impermanence.

I’d like to ask all of you to use this day to reflect on the impermanent nature of life. Do not let impermanence be terrible news, for death is never the finale. It never has been, and it never will be. That is not a message of a desperate cry for survival. Therefore, just let impermanence be.

If you let impermanence be, then you will see that it has an amazing quality to bring a beautiful awareness in you, just like either light brightens the view, or dimness helps to contrast and focus it, so that our vision is clearer than ever before. Again, this is not a message of encouragement to cling on to living. Therefore, don’t be afraid. Just breathe and reflect on impermanence.

In this way, we will beat each and every beat of our heart in the same way as that of an enlightened being’s Bodhi heart.

保持心識平靜/如何平衡照顧自己與慈悲照顧他人

It is important that we keep our minds calm, that our minds are at peace and not disturbed by emotion. Otherwise, if our name, our image is attacked, then although others are just attacking our name, our image – just the reflection in the mirror and not even our physical body – we may still feel hurt and give rise to unnecessary commotion.

我們如何平衡照顧自己與慈悲照顧他人?

在動機方面,我們必須非常非常的貪婪- 我們想的是整個世界!我們想的是無量無數眾生,我們希望能利益所有眾生。

How do we balance taking care of ourselves, and being compassionate and taking care of others?

#Karmapa:

In terms of motivation, we have to be very, very greedy – we want to take on the whole world! We want to think of all the countless sentient beings. We want to benefit all of them.

So we have to be very ambitious. Now in terms of how do we go about it, today, tomorrow, day after? Very simple. We just at the moment accumulate merit and wisdom to help ourselves. Because at the moment, we don’t have the capacity or the ability to benefit all sentient beings. In all honesty, we don’t. We can try, but we will lose a lot of energy to accomplish anything. So instead, we help ourselves. When we help ourselves, we do so not with a selfish motive, but with the aim of helping myself in order to serve all other sentient beings.

As Buddhists, we need the courage to understand and accept that there is no such thing as a real, solid or permanent home – and therefore nothing to be attached to. In absolute terms, what really matters is that we use our innate values of wisdom and compassion, our Inner Wealth, to benefit all living beings.

在一個傳統已越來越被遺忘的世界裡,值得我們思考慶祝生日這個歷久不衰的習俗。

佛教徒不會反對慶祝活動,儘管我們並沒有特別習慣去紀念生辰。

當談到許多人慶祝釋迦牟尼佛誕生、死亡和涅槃紀念日的衛塞節方式時,我們會以好奇和理解來迎接這個時刻。

從佛教觀點上,過去、現在和未來三世諸佛並沒有看到誕生是實有的。從究竟意義來說,沒有出生就像沒有死亡一樣。從相對意義而言,誕生的顯現,我們就認為這是從無到有的一件事,因此覺得它是一件值得慶祝的事情。

與此同時,我們看到像悉達多太子這樣的普通人,變成一個非凡偉大的佛陀。同樣地,在相對意義而言,我們認為這是從無到有的事情!一個曾經是農民的兒子怎能成為歷史上的佛陀呢?我們看到這種可能性,這種潛能,對我們所有人來說都是存在的,這也是為什麼紀念的原因。

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message for his students on the occasion of Vesak:

‘In a world in which tradition is increasingly discarded, it is interesting to reflect on the enduring tradition of celebrating birthdays.

Buddhists do not discourage celebrations, though we do not really have a particular habit of honouring birthdays.

When it comes to the way in which many people celebrate Vesak, the anniversary of the birth, death and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni, we approach this moment with curiosity and understanding.

From the perspective of Buddhist philosophy, all of the Buddhas of the past, present and future have not seen an inherent birth. In absolute terms, there is no birth, just as there is no death. In relative terms, there is the appearance of the birth, and we perceive this almost as something from nothing, and it is therefore a cause for celebration.

At the same time, we see an ordinary person like that of Prince Siddhartha somehow transform into an extraordinary being, a Buddha. Again, in relative terms, we perceive this as something from nothing! How is it that a once-upon-a-time farmer’s son can become the historical Buddha? We see that this possibility, this potential, is there for all of us, and again this is cause for remembrance.

Therefore, on Vesak, we perform traditional rituals, such as the recitation of and listening to the sutras; meditation on compassion through samadhi; and charitable activities for those who are in need, in Buddhists communities worldwide.

Practices like these dispel all kinds of disappointments – especially when there is no cake!

Everything happens due to a cause, and due to that cause there is that effect. Between the cause and effect, there also need to be the conditions, so you see, all these chains of dependency. So that is another way of showing that everything is impermanent, everything is empty.
Interdependence is another way to introduce the idea of emptiness. When we talk about emptiness, it can draw a lot of confused and unwanted thoughts, fear, and all kinds of unnecessary conclusions. So that’s why another way of interpreting it, is by using the word interdependence. Because when you say ‘interdependence’, it naturally shows that there is no one separate entity that is autonomous or independent. Each of the components must depend on another and therefore there is no singular entity. This is emptiness. Everything happens due to a cause, and due to that cause there is that effect. Between the cause and effect, there also need to be the conditions, so you see, all these chains of dependency. So that is another way of showing that everything is impermanent, everything is empty.

The nature of a tamed mind is like space. When a practitioner’s mind is tamed – he or she is enlightened – the practitioner’s mind, as well as all of its experiences of samsara, both cease to exist, just like a dream.
It is important to notice the words, ‘like space,’ because space is used here only as an example, and one is not referring to space itself; otherwise it could mislead practitioners into misunderstanding enlightenment as great numbness.

我們誰都不是從外星球來到我們稱之為地球這個獨一無二的岩石世界,

我們誰都不會將墓地作為生命的終站

我們誰都不能跟彼此分割,就像糊了混在一起的醬一樣,還有

我們誰都不是天使或魔鬼的本質。

然而,對於將這類方式聯繫著生活的那些人,我祈求諸佛菩薩以他們的慈悲本願,引導我們擺脫這種永無止息的妄念。

我請求我們能開啟心性,而不是只打開我們五根之門。

請用永恆不朽的方法,即「聞、思、修」三慧作修持。”

A message from Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, on the occasion of his 36th birthday in this lifetime.

‘In accordance with the wisdom of the victorious Buddhas and what they have seen, ultimately
none of us are born with inherent anxiety or hereditary disease,

none of us are doomed to die to an eternity,

none of us are meant to be permanent like statues,

none of us are cut off in the manner of outcasts,

none of us have come from an alien world to this unique rock we call Earth,

none of us are going to the cemeteries for good,

none of us are inseparably one like a mixed paste and

none of us are other, being fundamentally angelic or demonic.

However, for those of us who relate to our lives in any of these ways, I pray to the Victorious Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to call upon their natural promise of kindness to guide us from this cyclic whirlpool of thoughts.

And I call upon us to open our hearts instead of opening only our five senses.

Please pray through the timeless methods known as the traditional practices of listening, contemplating and meditating.’

斯里蘭卡發生連環爆炸事件,在我寫這消息的時候,至少已有207人喪生,數百人受傷。

Sri Lanka explosions: #Karmapa’s message –

Dear dharma friends

As I write, at least 207 people have lost their lives and hundreds more have been injured after several explosions in Sri Lanka.

During a holy week for Christians, worshippers were attacked in their houses of worship. Others were targeted in hotels.

Please join me in praying for all those affected, for the people of Sri Lanka, and for the end of violence in our world.
