I was very saddened upon being told of the sudden & unexpected passing of His Holiness Gyurme Tenpa’i Gyaltsen Rinpoche. I hope and continuously pray to the Three Jewels and the ocean of Protectors that all his remaining plans and projects to benefit beings will be spontaneously accomplished.

I pray that his supreme reincarnation will manifest without delay and hindrances, that his reincarnation will remain among us for a long time and that his deeds to benefit beings may be present and apparent through the ten directions.

Dear dharma friends

The wildfires currently sweeping California are the most destructive and the joint deadliest in its history, killing 31 people so far, with more than 200 people still unaccounted for.

As we see these distressing scenes on our screens, may we offer our hearts for all of those who have lost their loved ones, their homes, their livelihoods.

While it is natural for such news to give rise to emotion, let us also observe our minds carefully, for unchecked emotions can also leave a destructive path in their wake.

At this time, and at all times, let us continue to practice the Buddha dharma, a practice of wisdom and compassion.

Dear dharma friends,

Yesterday morning, a domestic flight from Jakarta, Indonesia, ended in disaster when the plane crashed into the sea shortly after take-off, killing all 189 people on board.

This latest tragedy comes only one month after the nation suffered a devastating earthquake and tsunami, which claimed more than 2,100 lives.

May we all pray for the people of Indonesia, as well as all those affected by other recent tragic events around the world, including the mass shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday, in which eleven worshippers lost their lives.

Join Karmapa at the Kagyu Monlam in Bodh Gaya

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, invites students around the world to join him under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, as he presides over prayers at the annual Kagyu Monlam, 16-22 December 2018.

The Kagyu Monlam is the most significant event of the year for the Karma Kagyu lineage. Tens of thousands of students, monks, nuns and other venerables come together in the place where Buddha attained enlightenment, as Karmapa leads prayers for the benefit of all sentient beings.
The main prayer recited at the Kagyu Monlam is known as the ‘King of Aspiration Prayers’ or the ‘Samantabhadra Wishing Prayer’.

As Karmapa has said,
When we come together to the sacred place where Gautama Buddha reached enlightenment, and offer aspirations for peace and prosperity for all beings, the merit, wisdom and benefit that is accumulated is tremendous.

Practitioners around the world are invited to join Karmapa, in person or online. Several of the teachings will be live streamed so that students who are not able to travel to Bodh Gaya can still join Karmapa and their fellow Karma Kagyu students. Details for the streaming will be published in the coming weeks.

In addition to presiding over prayers at the Mahabodhi Stupa in Bodh Gaya, Karmapa will also be leading the Fourth International Karma Kagyu Meeting, and engaging in local community and charitable activities through his South Asian Buddhist Association (SABA).

Dear dharma friends,

I am writing to offer my prayers for the people of Indonesia, following the tsunami and earthquake that has devastated the city of Palu, killing at least 380 people, and directly affecting thousands more.

This tragic event and loss of life is yet another reminder of the impermanent nature of our material world.

We may take some solace from this impermanence. For in the midst of great suffering and heartache, we may feel that there is no hope, and that we will always feel this pain. However, just as night never lasts forever, and the sun always rises again, so our pain is not permanent. We will feel hope again.

Please join me in offering our compassion to all those affected by this disaster.

Dear dharma friends
On this United Nations International Day of Peace, I would like to offer a message to all those who are facing difficulties in their lives.

Whether you have lost loved ones, survived hurricanes, typhoons, floods or famine, or whether you are facing storms in your personal lives or at work, it may feel that peace is a distant dream, and that it is somehow unreachable.

From one perspective, peace may be closer than you think. When I say ‘peace’, what do I mean? Perhaps one way to describe it is in terms of a bond, a devotion and love so great that it has no limits.

In life, it is often our greatest challenges that lead to the deepest devotion. The tragic death of the great master Gampopa’s wife and children, and his devotion to the Buddha dharma, are indivisible. Just as the loss of the great master Milarepa’s family and home, and his spirituality, are also intertwined.

Peace and chaos are inseparable. Many of us who live in relative comfort may never experience the deep bond that is so often seen in stories of resilience and survival. So while we pray for the end of suffering and its causes, we do not label suffering as ‘bad’ or ‘good’ for we can see that those who suffer may have insights that we cannot experience, and that even in the midst of tragedy and heartbreak, the seed of limitless love can be sown.

We are all different, and how you apply these thoughts is up to you. But try not to force any connection. For example, when we listen to the songs that others listen to, sometimes there is no resonance in our hearts. Let’s not force it, but instead listen gently to their songs and learn from their experiences. We need to learn our own way to achieve peace.

I hope that this message provides some comfort to you and helps you develop the courage that you need to move on with hope in your hearts.

Dear dharma friends,

The devastation and loss of life in Kerala, caused by the worst flooding in a century, is difficult to comprehend. More than 300 people havez died. More than 200,000 people have been left homeless and in camps. With more rains predicted, the situation is feared to become even more dire.

And yet, there is hope. This week, India celebrated its Independence Day – with unity in diversity, the whole country came together to celebrate, among other things, the resilience and strength of its citizens. These qualities, together with India’s spiritual wealth, are greatly needed at this time. While material resources and humanitarian aid are crucial – our prayers, our compassion, our loving kindness, are just as beneficial. When we practice the Buddha dharma, and dedicate the merit of our practice to all sentient beings, we offer hope for those who need it most.

May we all pray together for all those affected by this disaster.

Dear dharma friends,

I am writing to you following the motorway bridge collapse in Genoa, Italy, in which at least 35 people lost their lives, including three children.

It is natural, in the midst of such tragedies, to feel a sense of hopelessness. We may feel overwhelmed, to the point where we can’t even imagine any kind of hope exists. When hope is lost, everything is lost. As practitioners, we have an important role to show that hope still exists, even in the aftermath of such devastating news.

As Shantideva says in The Way of the Bodhisattvas, ‘May the discouraged become uplifted and perfectly steadfast’.

Through turning to our practice, again and again, we can be positive role models and inspire others on their path. Through the Buddha dharma, we can shine a light on hope even in the darkest of moments.

May we all join in prayers for those affected by this disaster, and may all those who feel lost and suffering find hope.

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message in the wake of recent disasters in Greece and Laos:

Dear dharma friends

The devastating wildfires near Athens in Greece have claimed the lives of at least 76 people. The scenes of people fleeing for safety from the flames, mourning the loss of their loved ones, may understandably give rise to emotion.

And so it is with the dam collapse in south-east Laos, which led to flash floods that killed at least 20 people, with more than 100 still missing. The aerial images of homes submerged by water, with villagers and children stranded on rooftops, may be upsetting for some of us.

The practice of the Buddha dharma is a path to mastering our emotions, rather than letting our emotions control us. This is not about being heartless or uncompassionate – quite the opposite.

It is at times like these, when natural or unnatural disasters strike, or when we experience tragedy in our personal lives, when the benefits of our practice – a practice of compassion – are most keenly experienced. The purpose of our practice is to give rise to Bodhicitta, the human heart.

Through the practice of the Buddha dharma, we are able to experience limitless compassion and wisdom. We are no longer overwhelmed by anger, fear, or other afflictive emotions (klesa), and are instead able to tap into our Inner Wealth, our innate values, for the benefit of all. We experience all compounded phenomena as impermanent. In time, we are able to let go of fear and anger altogether, and let compassion rise.

As I have said before, the compassionate heart is even more precious than a Buddha. In the human heart, we see limitless hope.

Therefore, let us practice and pray for those affected by these and all disasters, and may the benefits of our compassionate hearts reach all sentient beings.

Shamar Rinpoche’s tireless efforts to preserve our precious lineage are a great example for all of us. May we honour his example by continuing to practice the Buddha dharma, and share a message of peace for all sentient beings.

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares this message in the wake of the recent volcanic eruption in Guatemala.

Dear dharma friends,

The devastating volcanic eruption that took place in Guatemala has claimed at least 75 lives. 200 people are still missing, and thousands of homes and livelihoods have been destroyed.

As the country mourns those that have passed, we dedicate our merit to all of the victims and their loved ones.

In the face of such sudden loss, we see all too clearly the impermanent nature of our world. For there is no more stark reminder of our constantly changing lives than when we lose loved ones.

As we join Guatemala in prayer, may we reflect on the first of the Four Seals that the Buddha taught: ‘All compounded phenomena are impermanent.’

今天是紀念佛陀釋迦牟尼的誕生、成道和涅槃的衛塞節前夕。

回顧大約2500年前的今天，悉達多太子在菩提伽耶的菩提樹下攝心端坐進入甚深禪定，度過了他作為凡夫的最後一刻。當月亮接近最圓滿的時侯，悉達多太子的慈悲和智慧體證到最完美無漏的佛性。

衛塞節不僅讓我們從佛陀的一生作思考，也讓我們反觀我們的修行道路、菩薩道，以及開悟的如理修行方法。我們不需要在信心上作出什麼重大改變去相信什麼不可能的事情。悉達多太子沒有透過神奇或神秘的方法成就佛道。他成佛的道路是精進不懈地修行，作為一位勇敢無懼的典範，這也是我鼓勵大家在這個吉祥的日子要深思的事情。

我們所有人都有佛性，我們所有人都有無限智慧和慈悲寶藏的內在財富。佛陀顯示在我們面前的道路就是我們內心的道。

為了證悟我們的佛性，我們必須將我們的生命投入修行。我們在什麼地方都可以修習正念和覺知。我們在什麼時候都可以實踐慈悲和仁愛。當一個好人是我們此刻、此處就可以做的事情。

在這吉祥的日子，我們記念一位偉人的非凡生命和榜樣，可以於一世從輪迴中得解脫的聖人。我們還記得佛陀對我們所有人的教誨：

我們同樣有著非凡的愛、無條件的愛。我們也同樣有非凡和無盡的慈悲。我們也有能力成為別人的榜樣，啟迪無量眾生。

因此，讓我們將生命全然投入、專注修行，並且每天實踐菩薩道。

Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, shares the following message on the eve of Vesak:

Today marks the eve of Vesak, the anniversary of the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni.

Just think: some 2,500 years ago, on this very day, Prince Siddhartha was sitting in deep meditation under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, spending his last moments as an ordinary being. As the moon approached its fullest state, so Prince Siddhartha’s compassion and wisdom were growing to their fullest Buddha-nature.

Vesak is an opportunity to reflect not only on the life of Buddha, but on the journey that all of us are on, the path of a Bodhisattva, and the practical steps that it takes to become enlightened. For we do not need to take a leap of faith. Prince Siddhartha did not become a Buddha through some kind of magic or mystery. He became a Buddha through dedicated practice, through being an example of great courage, and this is what I encourage all of us to consider on this auspicious day.

All of us have a Buddha nature, all of us have an Inner Wealth with limitless treasures of wisdom and compassion. The path that Buddha set before us is the path that lies within us.

To realise our Buddha nature, we must to dedicate our lives to practice. The practice of mindfulness and awareness is something that we can all apply anywhere. The practice of loving kindness and compassion is something that we can all apply at any time. The practice of being a good human being is something that we can all apply right here, right now.

At this auspicious time, we remember the life and example of an extraordinary being, someone who freed himself from samsara in a single lifetime. We also remember Buddha’s message for all of us:

We too are capable of extraordinary love, unconditional love. We too are capable of extraordinary compassion, limitless compassion. We too are capable of being an example, to inspire countless beings.

Therefore, let us dedicate our lives to practice, and take daily steps on the journey of a Bodhisattva.
